Three Strategies to Avoid the Flu

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), this flu season is turning out to be one of the most deadly in 20 years. Every day, more deaths are reported on the news. What are you doing to avoid getting the flu?

Can you imagine going through the entire winter free of the flu? Good! Here are some helpful suggestions.

Number 1: Think about self-talk. The first strategy is to understand that being sick or well begins with your thinking or your attitude. How many times have you heard “It’s going around at the office, the kids bring it home from school, and I catch everything that’s going around,” or “Everyone at home is already feeling sick.“ When we hear this over and over, we may feel there’s no avoiding an encounter with a cold or flu. Change your thoughts; avoid the flu bug.

Words, emotions, and state of mind work together to attract those things we wish to avoid. Mike Dooley, Wayne Dyer, and others have said “thoughts become things” and “what you think about, you bring about.” To change the things that come into our lives, it makes sense to change our thoughts. But how can we do that? It’s simpler that you might think. Change your words until they become your thoughts. I used this strategy at my last 2 jobs. While others were talking about their illnesses, or what’s going around, I would simply say “I don’t get sick,” or “I don’t get the flu,” or “I never worry about it.” Some didn
’t believe me – one fellow accused me of having a “super immune system,” so I didn’t get sick. Changing my words changed my feelings – and it worked. It still does.

Number 2: Hand washing. It’s as simple as washing our hands after touching what others have touched. We know we should, but do we? This is especially true in public restrooms, and it’s an effective method of preventing infection from contact.

Number 3: Natural antivirals and immune-boosting foods and supplements. I saw a very short bit of news that said, “While it cannot be recommended, some people use oil of oregano on the soles of their feet to prevent colds and flu.” Although I’ve known and used oil of oregano for years, I was amazed to see it on the news. Oregano – Origanum vulgare, essential oil from Italy has the properties needed to fight viruses and bacteria. Oregano is anti-infectious, antibacterial, antiviral, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, and immune boosting.

The Journal of Medicinal Food published an analysis of oregano oil’s efficacy against three Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and two Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis) bacteria. Medicinal, true oregano (Origanum vulgare) harvested at various growth stages were tested, and all three were effective against all five bacterial strains. Similar findings were published two years prior to the Journal’s article, when researchers in Pakistan found oregano oil to be effective against parasites and even cancer cells!

Finally, if you do get the first symptoms of the flu, we recommend you get with your doctor immediately and strongly request antiviral treatment. There are three FDA-approved influenza antiviral drugs recommended by the CDC this season to treat influenza:

• Oseltamivir (available as a generic version or under the trade name Tamiflu®),
• Zanamivir (trade name Relenza®), and
• Peramivir (trade name Rapivab®).

There you have it – three great ways to avoid the flu this season! Again, we all know this year’s flu is the worst we’ve seen in several decades. If you have symptoms of the flu, we urge you to contact your doctor immediately.
